Shree Maa Budhi Thakurani Temple
Shree Maa Budhi Thakurani Temple is a revered Hindu shrine located in Triveni Nagar, Brahmapur (Berhampur), Odisha, India. Dedicated to Goddess Budhi Thakurani, a fierce form of Shakti, the temple is the spiritual heart of Berhampur and a focal point of Odia culture. It is especially renowned for the biennial Thakurani Yatra, one of southern Odisha’s grandest festivals.
Origins and Deity
The temple’s history is linked to the 16th–17th centuries, when the Devanga (weaver) community migrated from Andhra and founded the shrine under the Mahuri Raja’s patronage. The presiding goddess, Maa Budhi Thakurani, is worshipped not as a full idol but as a silver mask (Mukha) placed among sacred weapons—symbolizing divine wisdom and protection. The priests traditionally come from the barber caste, reflecting the temple’s inclusive social heritage.
Rituals and Worship
Daily rituals begin with the Mangala Aarti at dawn and conclude with the Sandhya Aarti at night. Devotees offer red flowers, coconuts, bangles, and sindoor, while sacred red threads (Raksha Sutra) are tied around the sanctum for protection. Photography is restricted inside. The temple remains open roughly from 5 AM to 10 PM.
Thakurani Yatra Festival
Held every two years during the Hindu month of Chaitra (March–April), Thakurani Yatra celebrates the goddess’s symbolic visit to her parental home at Desi Behera Street. The month-long procession features 100-foot chariots, folk dances, tiger-body painting performances (Puli Vesha), and vibrant “vesha” costumes. The event attracts hundreds of thousands of pilgrims and is a defining expression of Berhampur’s identity.
