Mythological significance
According to Hindu tradition, Maa Tara Tarini is among the 51 Shakti Peethas formed from the body parts of Goddess Sati. The site is believed to embody her breasts, symbolizing nourishment and motherhood. The twin goddesses are regarded as forms of Adi Shakti, venerated across eastern India, and are considered presiding deities of Odisha.
Architecture and setting
The temple complex, built in traditional Odia style, stands on a hill flanked by the scenic Rushikulya River. Devotees reach the shrine via a steep staircase or a ropeway offering panoramic views of the surrounding forests and plains. The sanctum houses granite idols of the twin goddesses, adorned with silver and gold ornaments.
Festivals and rituals
The Chaitra Mela, held on Tuesdays in the Hindu month of Chaitra, is the temple’s grandest celebration. Pilgrims gather for rituals, animal sacrifices (in some cases symbolic), and community offerings seeking blessings for prosperity and protection. The temple also observes Navaratri and Sankranti festivals with special pujas.
