Formation and geography

Tampara Lake originated in 1766 following a battle between the British East India Company and French settlers, when explosions created a large depression later filled by rainwater and inflows from the Rushikulya River. It now stretches roughly 5.8 km long and 670 m wide, functioning as a natural flood-control basin during monsoon seasons.

Ecology and biodiversity

The lake hosts more than 60 bird species and 46 fish species, including vulnerable fauna such as the common carp (Cyprinus carpio), common pochard (Aythya ferina), and river tern (Sterna aurantia). Aquatic macrophytes and riparian vegetation support a balanced wetland ecosystem. Average annual fish production is about 12 tonnes, making the lake a key livelihood source for local fishers and farmers.
